When we decided to pursue autonomous goods delivery as our first product, we knew that our service would have to scale to millions of people to meaningfully impact lives. We also knew that scaling our product couldn’t come at the expense of the environment. Today on Earth Day, we’re proud to share our ESG report that details how we are striving to operate responsibly in order to better everyday life through robotics.

We believe we’re the first AV company to formalize an ESG program, and we’re also the first to publish our carbon footprint or diversity statistics, leveraging indicators from the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and using GHG Protocol for our carbon footprint methodology.

We developed our ESG program in part because we understand that the transportation sector has a large impact on the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the transportation sector is the top contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and the pollution it causes increases the prevalence of life-threatening childhood asthma, disproportionately affecting communities of color. The future of the transportation industry must be zero emissions.

While we’ve been building only zero-emissions vehicles since our start, we’re not stopping there. We’re committing to using 100% renewable energy to power our battery-electric fleet and facilities, starting this year with renewable electricity sourced from Texas wind.

Previously, we also commissioned a report by Steer to determine the societal benefit of AV delivery services and discovered that utilization of delivery AVs can, over the course of a decade, prevent 407 million tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere — that’s equivalent to the residential emissions over the last decade from the four largest cities in the US. AV delivery at scale will also create and sustain more than 3 million green jobs, such as new autonomous fleet technicians, and improve the safety of our roads, helping to avoid hundreds of thousands of serious crashes and injuries.

We strongly believe in the benefits of adhering to responsible environmental, social, and corporate governance practices, and we’re only at the beginning of our ESG journey. Since our service aims to be an integral part of daily life, we’ll need to earn the trust of every community in which we’ll be operating. That means demonstrating we’re a positive force by being transparent about the steps we’re taking to measure and improve upon our commitment to sustainability.

Our vision is a greener planet and a healthier everyday life for everyone: we won’t stop improving until that vision becomes reality.
